The UFO Fear Factor: Fear Of UFOs And Aliens In Popular Culture

Either because of being a civilization steeped in war, strong apocalyptic beliefs amougst the most advanced portion of the world, or because of intentional manipulation by "the mirage men" more popularly known as "the Men IN Black" (which now exists as a movie) or maybe simply because of the H.G Wells book "War Of the Worlds", fear of aliens and UFOs is normal in popular culture. This post is just a random collection of videos that just shows how far back, and how common in cinema or when encountering anything in the sky one may not understand (especially if drunk), fear of objects in the sky really is.

Lets begin with a couple of old movies and see which theme is more popular.

Old Movies: One With Evil Aliens And One With Good Aliens...

A cult classic. Topic: Alien Zombies;

Plan 9 from Outer Space

From IMDb: "Can your heart stand the shocking facts about grave robbers from outer space?" That's the question on the lips of the narrator of this tale about flying saucers, zombies and cardboard tombstones. A pair of aliens, angered by the "stupid minds" of planet Earth, set up shop in a California cemetery. Their plan: to animate an army of the dead to march on the capitals of the world. (The fact that they have only managed to resurrect three zombies to date has not discouraged them.) An intrepid airline pilot living near the cemetery must rescue his wife from this low-budget terror. "Can you prove it *didn't* happen?"

A relatively unknown movie where good aliens help humankind against bad aliens (another common theme even today, especially in tv shows or if Superman is properly seen as alien);

Attack From Space

From IMDb: Benevolent aliens from the planet Emerald send superhero Starman to protect Earth from invasion by an evil alien race called the Spherions. When Starman arrives on Earth, he discovers a conspiracy involving Earth's top scientists, and he must root out the traitors and also stop the impending alien invasion.

Real Life

Here, a huge lightshow, like fireworks but without earthly origin (in the minds of the viewers), sparked fear. People then freak out more by saying fearful stuff to one another and hysteria spreads...

Rocket trail sparks fear;

Similar episode occurred in the war of the world radio broadcast which, probably, was able to reach a larger "viewership" than normal due to hyped up fear. In both cases it was assurance by authorities that calmed the populace... as is probably the case for all the rest of these...

Russia's new ballistic missile mistaken for alien invasion after 'UFO' is fired close to homes in dramatic footage The weapon was fired into a remote area in Kazakhstan as tensions heighten over North Korea

A new intercontinental missile being tested by Vladimir Putin's Russia has been mistaken for an alien invasion. Confused witnesses thought the bright object in the sky - which had a 'wiggly tail' - was an extraterrestrial ship ."If anybody asks me to describe an UFO, this is exactly how I would have pictured it," one baffled witness said. Another posted online: "I was horrified, and all my friends saw it, nobody knew what it was." One observer feared a black hole had arrived, and another said: "I'm scared of aliens, I heard they kidnap people."And another wrote: "It was an alien spacecraft with a wiggly tail." Locals were told by the Defence Ministry that the strike was "not an act of invasion or breaking through state borders" by Russia. The missile was described as appearing like a brightly illuminated ball with several halos. Some said they saw a "wiggly tail", while other witnesses said it "changed shape" and "suddenly disappeared".A student wrote: "What was it?? Do you trust this missile story? It was so close, right above our hostel."Locals were told by the Defence Ministry that the strike was "not an act of invasion or breaking through state borders" by Russia.

'We're under attack!': Terrified Russians fear 'alien invasion as three UFOs' flash across night sky In shaky footage of the fireballs blazing through the air, people can be heard shouting and swearing in fear before the UFOs disappear from sight.

The footage was captured above the Russian city of Krasnodar by Alexander Sindetsky. As he follows the UFO through the black sky, he yells: “We're under attack!” People around him gasp in shock while a fellow resident, identified only as Anastasia K, said: “I’m next to the Kisses Bridge in Krasnodar, and a huge fireball flew towards Turgenevsky Bridge. It slowly fell, then disappeared.”
The fireball appears to split into there as it travels across the sky.
Another resident said: “It flew fast and divided into several parts, less bright than the core.” The most likely explanation is that the glow was a meteor exploding and burning up in the sky after entering the earth's atmosphere.

Gradually, the ominous orange glow moves further away and eventually extinguishes in the far distance. Many residents managed to film the bright light, with several videos going viral across social media. At the time, many people were concerned about the ball of light and jumped to the conclusion it was an alien space craft.
