9/11 History: The GOP's Strange War On 9/11 First Responders

Background:  Lessons In Politics From The Republicans 5 - Attack 9/11 First Responders To Push Your Agenda Then Deny Them Healthcare For Fun

This was one of the strangest activities the Bush Administration did, i.e. not care - and even opposed - healthcare for people who helped out on and after 9/11. I think I figured out why. See my conclusion at the end of this piece to understand WHY the Bush Administration & GOP have been waging war on 9/11 first responders and helpers all these years;

White House Pressured EPA Not To Warn Public About Health Effects of 9/11

As Study Links 9/11 Debris to Cancer, Details Emerge on How Officials Downplayed Ground Zero Dangers

An often-forgotten group victims in the September 11th narrative are the many rescue workers who fell sick after being exposed to contaminants at Ground Zero. According to a new article by ProPublica, recently uncovered documents reveal that federal officials in Washington and New York went further than was previously known to downplay concerns about health risks, and misrepresented or concealed information that might have protected thousands of people from the contaminated air at Ground Zero. Meanwhile, a new study has provided potentially groundbreaking evidence of a link between exposure to toxic debris at Ground Zero and the development of cancer. The medical journal, The Lancet, reports male firefighters exposed to dust and smoke at Ground Zero have a 19 higher percent risk of developing cancer than colleagues who were not exposed. The finding comes just one month after the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health ruled there’s insufficient evidence to draw a link between the smoldering ruins of the World Trade Center after 9/11 and cancer. Firefighters and rescue workers have been unable to receive payments for cancer treatments because cancer is not covered under legislation providing care for 9/11 responders. We speak with Anthony DePalma, author of "City of Dust: Illness, Arrogance, and 9/11." His latest article for ProPublica is called "New Docs Detail How Feds Downplayed Ground Zero Health Risks." We’re also joined by Joel Kupferman, executive director of the New York Environmental Law and Justice Project. He was co-counsel for a group of residents and workers suing the EPA and ex-EPA Head Christine Todd Whitman. [includes rush transcript]

Sen. Clinton & Rep. Nadler Call For Investigation on White House & EPA Lies Over Health Impact Of 9/11

Newsday today reveals that EPA animal tests concluded that the World Trade Center debris dust caused lung disease in test animals and that the EPA didn’t begin testing debris dust until 10 days after Sept. 11. U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rep. Jerrold Nadler have called for a Congressional investigation over reports that the Environmental Protection Agency and White House mislead the public over the health hazards of the collapse of the World Trade Center. Clinton said, "I know a little bit about how White Houses work. I know somebody picked up a phone, somebody got on a computer, somebody sent an e-mail, somebody called for a meeting, somebody in that White House probably under instructions from somebody further up the chain told the E.P.A.: `Don’t tell the people of New York the truth.’ And I want to know who that is." Meanwhile Newsday revealed today that the government did not begin testing debris dust near the World Trade Center until 10 days after the Sept. 11 attacks. And Newsday reports that EPA scientists later concluded — but never told the public — that the dust caused lung disease in test animals.

Hundreds of Workers March On Washington, Charging Bush with Exclusionary Relief Policies After 9/11

Hundreds of New York City low-wage workers marched on Washington yesterday. Chanting "Health care, not toxic air" in Cantonese, Spanish and English, the workers say the Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied low-income residents of lower Manhattan emergency aid for health care, rent and unemployment in the wake of September 11. Ex-EPA Head Christine Todd Whitman Denies Misleading Public over Environmental Dangers After 9/11; Admits White House Removed EPA Call for NYC Apartments to be Professionally Cleaned of Dust

Nearly six years after the Sept. 11 attacks, Whitman appeared on Capitol Hill Monday for the first time to answer questions about the EPA’s statements after the collapse of the World Trade Center. Since Whitman assured New Yorkers that the air was "safe to breathe," thousands of downtown residents and workers have become sick. [includes rush transcript]

Dishonorable Non-Mention: Why Was Juan Gonzalez Left Out of NY Daily News Pulitzer for 9/11 Health Effects?

The New York Daily News has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for an editorial series on the medical fallout from the 9/11 attacks. But in some circles, the Pulitzer award was as noteworthy for whom it did not mention: Daily News columnist and Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez. Gonzalez was the first reporter to question government officials’ insistence that the air around Ground Zero was safe and wrote a series of groundbreaking exposes on the issue. Eight Years After 9/11, Ground Zero Volunteer Dying of Lung Disease is One of Many Still Fighting for Justice

Today marks the eighth anniversary of 9/11, with vigils being held to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks. We look at a group of victims that are often forgotten in the September 11 narrative: the thousands of rescue workers who became sick after being exposed to contaminants at Ground Zero. Hundreds have died. We speak to Joe Picurro, a New Jersey ironworker who worked as a volunteer on the pile for twenty-eight days. He is now dying of lung disease. We also speak with Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who is co-sponsoring the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, and Dr. Jacqueline Moline, director of the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. As Senate Passes 9/11 Health Bill, Juan Gonzalez Notes Relative Absence of Key Figures Like Bush and Giuliani

On the final day of the 111th Congress, the Senate passed a $4.3 billion package to help the 9/11 rescue workers who were sickened by the toxins at Ground Zero. Democracy Now! co-host and New York Daily News columnist Juan Gonzalez, who first exposed what was happening to the Ground Zero workers, notes the "relative absence of some of the key figures who were involved at the time when the attacks happened," like former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, former New York governor George Pataki and former President George W. Bush. [includes rush transcript]

"I've Been to 44 Funerals in the Last 4 1/2 Years" - 9/11 First Responder John Feal Calls on Senate to Pass Zadroga Bill
More than nine years after the September 11th attacks, the Senate may be on the verge of finally voting on legislation that would grant $6.2 billion medical coverage and compensation to thousands of 9/11 first responders exposed to toxic substances at Ground Zero. The House passed a $7.4 billion version of the bill in September. But the Senate version has been held up by a Republican filibuster. We speak with John Feal, a former construction worker and 9/11 first responder. [includes rush transcript]

Anthony DePalma on "City of Dust: Illness, Arrogance, and 9/11"
In New York, a settlement will pay hundreds of millions of dollars to more than 10,000 rescue workers who were exposed to toxic debris after 9/11. We speak with Anthony DePalma, author of the new book City of Dust: Illness, Arrogance, and 9/11. "The dust becomes a metaphor," DePalma says, “because after those statements come out [about the air being safe to breathe], the rest of the people in New York were left without about the ability to believe anyone. Their trust crumbled, just the way the towers crumbled." [includes rush transcript]

U.S. Study Claims No Link Between 9/11 Rubble and Cancer; Treatment Not To Be Covered in Healthcare

The U.S. government claims there is insufficient evidence to suggest dust and debris inhaled after the World Trade Center attacks has caused cancer. The World Trade Center Health Program reached the conclusion after a preliminary analysis of peer-reviewed studies. The assessment has drawn anger from emergency personnel who responded to the disaster. The finding means cancer treatment sought by thousands of first responders will not be covered by healthcare legislation signed earlier this year.

For First Time, New York Links Death to 9/11 Dust Exposure

Here in New York, the city’s chief medical examiner has for the first time linked a death to dust exposure from the attack on the World Trade Center. In a letter released Wednesday, Dr. Charles Hirsch says he’s certain "beyond a reasonable doubt" that toxic dust from the debris contributed to the death of 42-year-old civil rights lawyer Felicia Dunn-Jones. Dunn-Jones was engulfed as she fled the attacks from her office just one block away from the trade center. She developed respiratory problems and died five months later. Dr. Hirsch’s decision could have a major impact on how the city deals with the growing number of illnesses and deaths linked to toxic exposure from the 9/11 attacks. New York Congressmember Carolyn Maloney said: "The city medical examiner has now accepted what thousands of people with 9/11-related illnesses and their doctors have long understood: that ground zero dust was harmful and even deadly.

This was one of the strangest activities the Bush Administration did, i.e. not care - and even oppose - healthcare for people who helped out on and after 9/11. It confused the hell out of me till I realized that ALL this 9/11-WTC helpers/workers are EYEWITNESSES! i.e. if there were a trial ALL of them could testify to seeing beams that look like this:

Beams that look like this were cut with demolition type explosives! And that's why the Bush Administration & the GOP have been opposing helping WTC workers, i.e. so they will die and there won't be any eyewitnesses left to testify in court to what they saw because even though they may not know what a cut beam means a scientist would (also explains the GOP's war on science!) {Note: They might also be eyewitnesses to the molten steel Government sponsored experts couldn't see and some firemen were witnesses to explosions necessary to a demolition... easy grand jury indictments necessary before a trial could begin!}
