The Coast Guard Domestic Terrorist Is Just The Latest Right Wing Terrorist Enabled By Media Silence On Fox News Incendiary Rhetoric

COAST GUARD OFFICER'S DOMESTIC TERROR PLOT, THE WHITE HOUSE'S CLIMATE PANEL & GOOGLE'S HIDDEN MICS 2/21/2019A Coast Guard officer is accused of domestic terrorism, a climate change skeptic will lead the White House climate panel, and hidden microphones are found in Google devices.

The guy searched for civil war (a regular Fox/GOP talking point);

And planned to target public figures and celebrities on the useless sensationalist media (who pose as journalists), like one of their followers - inspired by their rhetoric - did before;

i.e. just another right wing domestic terrorist inspired by right wing media.

Examples of Analytical research by media experts;

Media silence on right wing's incendiary rhetoric (whether by Fox or the GOP in general), combined with media tendency to treat right wing lies as valid talking points which they then promote to the general public, are all major facts in this continuous facade. Here are some examples of the research done on the topic...

Media silence supporting GOP talking points example;

Sunday shows mostly ignored the arrest of a white nationalist domestic terrorist within the Coast Guard’s ranksMeet the Press was the only major Sunday political news show to mention the arrest

On February 15, federal authorities arrested Christopher Hasson, a Coast Guard lieutenant and “a self-described white nationalist” who sought “to establish a ‘white homeland’" and wrote that he was “dreaming of a way to kill every last person on earth.” According to court documents, officials allege Hasson is a “domestic terrorist bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect government conduct." Authorities also discovered a stockpile of weapons and “a hit list of possible targets” including “high-ranking current and former Democratic politicians, activists, political organizations and media personalities.”
...
As right-wing extremism and violence in the United States have surged over the last decade, mainstream media outlets have failed to properly frame and report on the growing threat. From print outlets to network and cable news, the normalization of white nationalist rhetoric and the overall growth of a violent ideology have been, for the most part, treated as backburner issues among mainstream outlets. And while mainstream media play catch-up to what is a real and serious threat -- as the arrest of a self-described white nationalist within the ranks of the U.S. Coast Guard reminds us -- Fox News, the most-watched cable news outlet in the country, continues to unabashedly and irresponsibly pander to such extremists.

Inciting people (who believe Fox is telling the truth as its called a news channel and no one in media is fighting it) with talk of civil war;

Right-wing media have been issuing dire warnings about an impending civil war for yearsTrump’s media allies and accused Coast Guard terrorist agree that a second civil war could be coming soon

Joseph diGenova, a former attorney on President Donald Trump’s legal defense team, appeared on Laura Ingraham’s podcast on January 21 to warn listeners that “we are in a civil war in this country.” DiGenova also claimed that he does not anticipate seeing  any “civil discourse in this country for the foreseeable future,” adding, “It’s going to be total war.” He suggested that the solution for the current situation is partly for people to “buy guns.”
DiGenova’s comments were irresponsible and dangerous, but they’re also nothing new within the right-wing media echo chamber. And the conservative media trope that widespread political violence is imminent has real consequences. The Coast Guard lieutenant and self-admitted white nationalist who was recently arrested for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks against Democrats and some media figures searched online for the phrase “civil war if Trump impeached.”
Right-wing media figures have spent years fearmongering about an impending civil war, saying that “the left in America is becoming increasingly radicalized,” highlighting the Democrats' supposed “hatred for Normal Americans,” and claiming that colleges are “literally destroying the country” and pushing us toward a “real civil war.” Here are just a few examples:

Fox’s Sean Hannity told his radio listeners that “this country is headed towards a civil war” depending on the outcome of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign's possible collusion with Russia during the 2016 presidential elections. While Hannity insisted that he was “not talking about a war,” he claimed, “There’s going to be two sides of this that are fighting and dividing this country at a level we’ve never seen.”
Fox’s Tucker Carlson and a show guest agreed on the idea that colleges are "literally destroying the country" and pushing us toward a "real civil war." In 2017, Carlson said that striving for diversity "gets you to civil war."
In 2017, Fox contributor Newt Gingrich told Sean Hannity that “we are in a clear-cut cultural civil war” and expressed disappointment in Republicans who “don’t get it.”
Radio host and Trump ally Michael Savage asserted in 2017 that “there’s going to be a civil war” because of “what this left-wing is becoming in this country.”
Two days after the 2016 elections, then-Fox host Bill O’Reilly claimed that anti-Trump protests were proof of “a civil war brewing.” In 2015, O’Reilly also suggested that the divide over an anti-gay Indiana law is emblematic of a “cultural civil war.”
After a Maryland sheriff made headlines in 2014 warning of “all-out civil war” if President Barack Obama tried to overturn the Second Amendment, the media arm of the National Rifle Association downplayed the inflammatory nature of his comments, arguing that his threat of violence constituted a real threat only if Obama was actually planning to seize citizens’ firearms. In 2015, the NRA promoted an article by conservative gun blogger Bob Owens in which he fantasized about the prospect of Democrats starting a civil war over gun rights that ended with “survivors of the Democrat rebellion” being hanged.
Ever since Trump was elected to office, disgraced radio host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has been obsessed with the idea of an impending civil war or other violence if Trump is removed from the presidency. In June 2017, Jones’ outlet Infowars declared that the “first shots” of the second civil war had already been fired, asking its audience, “What will you do?” Former Infowars "journalist" Roger Stone, a Jones and Trump ally, even taped a segment at a gun range in which he and Jones prepare for a civil war “if there’s a coup d’etat.”
An April 10 article in The Federalist explicitly called for the political dissolution of the United States“before things get dangerous,” claiming, “This idea of breaking up the country may seem a bit outlandish now, but you won’t think so once real domestic unrest comes to your town.”
Notorious online troll Kurt Schlichter wrote a piece in Townhall titled “Why Democrats would lose the second Civil War, too.” The column extensively detailed Schlichter's violent fantasies of a war with Democrats, including an imagined scene in which a “bunch of hunters in Wisconsin” ambush a company of tanks: “They ambush the fuel and ammo trucks. Oh, and they wait until the gunner pops the hatch to take a leak and put a .30-06 round in his back from 300 meters.”
A September 11, 2018, op-ed in The American Conservative discussed “the Civil War on America’s horizon,” saying it has been primed by “Trump and his critics despis[ing] each other. All that's needed now is a spark.”
Paleoconservative commentator Pat Buchanan said that the United States is “approaching something of a civil war where the capital city seeks the overthrow of the sovereign and its own restoration.” Buchanan also wrote that it was time for Trump to “burn down the Bastille.”
In 2015, then-Fox contributor Erick Erickson said that the jailing of Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis for violating a federal court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples could lead to “another civil war.”
Cliven Bundy, a rancher who attained fame in conservative circles for a 2014 standoff with federal authorities, told Alex Jones that there would be civil war if local sheriffs did not disarm the federal government’s “bureaucratic armies.”
A 2013 Fox News column claimed that “when the economy tanks and the government checks have to shrink,” the “takers” dependent on government assistance and resentful of financially successful “makers” will “take to the streets.”
In 2010, then-Fox host Glenn Beck suggested on his radio show that Obama was "trying to destroy the country" and “going for fundamental transformation.” About a month later, Beck repeated his claim, saying, “I think we're headed for a civil war.”
Anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist Pamela Geller wrote in 2010 that Obama “is itching for a civil war. And at the rate he is going, he is going to get one.”
In 2008, Michael Savage declared that Obama was “hand-picked by some very powerful forces ... to drag this country into a hell that it has not seen since the Civil War.”
In 2006, Beck warned about the potential for Europe’s “political correctness” to start “a global religious civil war.”
In 2004, Pat Buchanan said on MSNBC that the South “wouldn’t lose” a civil war “the next time out.”

Pretending that opposing the the president (something they did with lies for years with Obama making him put Republicans in his administration), is a coup (incitement of anger that leads to domestic terrorism);

Fox News has spent years promoting claims of a “coup” against Donald Trump

Since Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, Fox News has been airing dire warnings that the “deep state” is plotting a “coup” to “ruin” Trump’s administration. Fox personalities have warned that the FBI, the Department of Justice, the Democratic Party, and others “hate” Trump and are attempting to “overthrow the government” with a “bloodless coup,” “a political coup,” a “soft coup,” a “silent coup,” a “slow-motion coup,” and “the first attempted coup d'etat in American history.” Trump is now channeling Fox’s “coup” nonsense, and that could end badly.
Here's a compilation of examples from December 2016 through this week:

Being investigated for crimes, a main talking point against Hillary in 2016, is now the reason for a inciting the GOP base into violence;

Study: Sean Hannity spent the last year laying the groundwork for an authoritarian response to the Russia probeI reviewed all 487 of Sean Hannity’s segments about the first year of Robert Mueller's investigation. Here’s what I found.

To watch Hannity’s broadcast over the last year is to plunge into a strikingly paranoid vision of America today.
“A soft coup is underway right here in the United States of America,” Hannity said last June, “in an attempt to overturn November's election results and forcibly remove a duly elected president from office, sinister forces quickly aligning in what is becoming now, in my mind, a clear and present danger.”
Specifically, Hannity claims that the leadership of the FBI, aided by Democrats and the media, conspired during the 2016 election to exonerate Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton of the crimes they knew she had committed. At the same time, Hannity alleges that this cabal fabricated the narrative that Trump had colluded with Russia in order to prevent him from becoming president -- and that once Trump won the election despite these efforts to manipulate voters, his enemies continued to try to drive him from office. This narrative bears little relationship to reality: In the months leading up to the election, the FBI kept its investigation into whether the Trump campaign collaborated with the Kremlin’s effort to support his candidacy a secret while repeatedly calling attention to the Clinton probe, likely costing the Democrat the presidency.
Nonetheless, the sinister cabal of Democrats, journalists, and the “deep state” are the villains of this story. And in Hannity’s telling, the host and his rotating cast of guests are the only thing standing between Trump and his annihilation.
Hannity presents his show as the only venue willing to tell the truth about the story, casting reporting about Trump, Russia, and the 2016 election not as the result of serious journalism, but as part of a plot against the president.
The Fox host is adamant that any suggestion of collusion between Trump associates and Russian officials is the stuff of “black-helicopter, tinfoil-hat conspiracy.” Instead, Hannity claims that the “real collusion” happened between Russia and the Democrats, in the form of various broadly discredited pseudoscandals.
Hannity’s attempts to exonerate Trump are disturbing enough. But it’s his attempts to turn his audience against a set of new enemies that are truly dangerous.
In Hannity’s telling, Mueller, a Republican who served as a Marine officer during the Vietnam War and was first appointed to run the FBI by George W. Bush, is running a duplicitous “witch hunt.” His team is composed of vicious Democratic partisans, and his personal relationship with former FBI Director James Comey is both suspect and actually illegal.
This counternarrative of Hannity’s, repeated ad nauseum over the months, is designed to lead his audience inexorably to a simple conclusion: “Mueller's probe is tainted. Hillary is a criminal.” And Trump is justified in taking drastic action, including shutting down the investigation into his activities and then prosecuting and jailing his opponents, to protect himself.
Hannity’s story is in step with the president’s own crude preferences and biases. Trump prefers an authoritarian model for law enforcement, in which the job of the Justice Department is to protect him and punish his enemies. Hannity’s show is providing Trump with both constant encouragement to act on those impulses, and is a powerful propaganda tool urging his base to support him if he does. Hannity benefits in turn from his private access to the president and Trump’s public displays of support for his program.
This joint strategy is working. Hannity’s ratings have never been higher. And while polls show broad support for Mueller’s probe, among Fox viewers and Republican voters, the Fox host and his colleagues, in collaboration with the president, have successfully poisoned the well.
The result is a very dangerous moment, in which the president could act on Hannity’s entreaties for authoritarian action -- and escape unscathed thanks to the supine congressional Republicans and the unyielding supportthe host and his allies have inculcated for the last year in Fox’s legions of viewers.
Hannity is the chief author of the sprawling conspiracy theory, but he could not weave this vast fictional drama alone. The motley team he’s assembled to help him would hardly inspire confidence in other circumstances.

Trump using domestic terrorism strategies as a way to stay in power thus inspiring more right wing loons to attack thinking they are defending America;

Trump keeps channeling Fox’s “coup” nonsense. This could end badly.

Amid declaring a national emergency on the U.S. southern border and playing many rounds of golf at his private club in Florida, President Donald Trump has found time over the past week to repeatedly gorge himself on Fox News programming and then regurgitate the network’s false ravings that senior Justice Department and FBI officials attempted a coup against him in the spring of 2017.
At issue are claims that Andrew McCabe, the former FBI deputy director and a frequent target of the president, has been making while promoting his forthcoming book. According to McCabe, in the days after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein discussed whether the 25th Amendment to the Constitution might be used to remove Trump from office on the grounds that he is mentally unfit for the job (in a statement, a Rosenstein spokesperson described McCabe’s “recitation of events” as “inaccurate and factually incorrect”).
The president’s propagandists at Fox have gone into overdrive in response, filling the network’s airwaves with overwrought declarations that Rosenstein and McCabe had been fomenting a coup d’etat.
This is simply wrong. A coup, by definition, is an extralegal seizure of power. That’s not what McCabe says was discussed. “Removing Trump from office by following the guidelines of the 25th Amendment would no more be a coup than removing him from office through impeachment or, really, than voting for another candidate in 2020,” The Washington Post’s Philip Bump pointed out. “It’s part of the system.” Rosenstein would be far from the first to suggest that the president’s often volatile and bizarre behavior justifies his removal from office. Trying to act on the amendment wouldn’t be a coup (though it seems extremely unlikely that the substantial constitutional hurdles needed to invoke the 25th Amendment would be cleared). But framing it as one can engender sympathy for Trump, rev up his base, and be used to justify drastic actions in response.
The president, as is his wont, has been eagerly watching Fox’s coverage and tweeting out tidbits to push the network’s false conspiracy theories into the mainstream.
Notably, on Monday night, the president tweeted a quote from Sean Hannity’s program in which the Fox star and sometime Trump adviser said McCabe had “admitt[ed] to plotting a bureaucratic coup.” “Treason!” the president added. Earlier that day, Trump tweeted Fox contributor Dan Bongino’s false claim on Fox & Friendsthat McCabe had described a “coup attempt.” The president added, “True!”
